Pattern Rejection

چکیده

The efficiency of pattern recognition is particularly crucial in two scenarios; whenever there are a large number of classes to discriminate, and, whenever recognition must be performed a large number of times. We propose a single technique, namely, pattern rejection, that greatly enhances efficiency in both cases. A rejector is a generalization of a classifier, that quickly eliminates a large fraction of the candidate classes or inputs. This allows a recognition algorithm to dedicate its efforts to a much smaller number of possibilities. Importantly, a collection of rejectors may be combined to form a composite rejector, which is shown to be far more effective than any of its individual components. A simple algorithm is proposed for the construction of each of the component rejectors. Its generality is established through close relationships with the Karhunen-Lodve expansion and Fisher’s discriminant analysis. Composite rejectors were constructed for two representative applications, namely, appearance matching based object recognition and local feature detection. The results demonstrate substantial efficiency improvements over existing approaches, most notably Fisher’s discriminant analysis.

For monitoring of renal transplant function, serum B2m was evaluated in 23 recipients. According to clinical diagnosis the patients were in four groups: 1) Successful renal transplant the mean concentration of SB2m pretransplantation was 73.1±26.1 mg/L but decreased to nearly normal level (4.43±1.17 mg/L) within 24-48h and then reached to 3.1 mg/L duting 20 days after transplantation. 2) Renal ...

An Experimental Study of the Optimal Class-Selective Rejection Rule

This report reviews various class-selective rejection rules for pattern recognition. A rejection rule is called class-selective if it does not reject an ambiguous pattern from all classes but only from those classes that are most unlikely to issue the pattern. Both optimal and suboptimal rules, e.g. top-n ranking, are considered. Experimental comparisons performed on the recognition of isolated...

A Novel Pattern Rejection Criterion Based on Multiple Classifiers

Aiming at improving the reliability of a recognition system, this paper presents a novel SVM-based rejection measurement (SVMM) and voting based combination methods of multiple classifier system (MCS) for pattern rejection. Compared with the previous heuristic designed criteria, SVMM is more straight-forward and can make use of much more information from the training data. The voting based comb...

Performance measures for classification systems with rejection

Classification systems with rejection are of paramount importance to applications where misclassifications and their effects are critical. We introduce three measures for performance evaluation of classification systems with rejection: nonrejected accuracy measures the ability of not rejecting correctly classified samples; classification quality measures the ability of making correct joint clas...

Pattern Detection Using Maximal Rejection Classi

In this paper we propose a new classiier-the Maximal Rejection Classiier (MRC)-for target detection. Unlike in pattern recognition, pattern detection problems require a separation between two classes, Target and Clutter, where the probability of the former is substantially smaller, compared to that of the latter. MRC is a linear classiier, based on successive rejection operations. Each rejectio...

On-board Diagnosis of Car Catalytic Converters Using Statistical Pattern Recognition

This paper introduces statistical pattern recognition techniques, applied to the monitoring of dynamic systems. Usually, distance rejection options enable to deal with incomplete knowledge about classes. A new technique, which extends the possibilities of distance rejection, is presented in order to detect partially unknown classes. These techniques have been applied in this paper to a very imp...
